Online Store Development in Armenia: Cost and Payments

What an online store really costs in Armenia, which payment and delivery integrations you need, how long it takes, and when Instagram plus a phone number is still the better answer.

An online store in Armenia is a real project, not a weekend task: catalog, cart, checkout, payment provider, delivery, and a way to process orders without losing them. Public starting prices for a custom store begin from 499 000 ֏, with the exact figure set after a short brief about your catalog, integrations and order flow. A realistic timeline for a first version is several weeks, and most of that time goes into product data and payment setup, not design. If you sell ten items a week through Instagram and answer every message yourself, you probably do not need a store yet.

When an online store makes sense

It pays off when at least one of these is true:

  • You have more than roughly fifty SKUs, with sizes, colors or variants that are painful to explain in chat.
  • Orders arrive faster than one person can answer them, and messages get lost between Instagram, WhatsApp and phone calls.
  • You need stock accuracy, because selling something you no longer have costs you a refund and a bad review.
  • You want repeat purchases: a customer who bought once should be able to reorder in two minutes without asking about price.
  • You sell to customers outside Yerevan or abroad, where a bank transfer plus a screenshot is not acceptable.

When social media is enough

A bakery with one counter and a queue out the door does not need a catalog. Neither does a studio that takes five custom orders a month at 200 000 ֏ each, where every order starts with a conversation anyway.

If your assortment changes daily, if you sell a service rather than a product, or if your whole business is one person on Instagram, keep it that way. What helps more in that case is a one-page site with clear prices, photos and a booking or order form, plus a catalog in the messenger you already use. That is a much smaller investment, and it answers the same question a customer has: what do you sell, what does it cost, how do I get it.

Another honest case for "not yet": you have no product photos, no descriptions, and nobody inside the company who will keep the catalog updated. A store without an owner goes stale in two months.

What building a store actually involves

The visible part is the catalog, filters, product page and cart. The part that decides whether the store works is behind it:

  • Product data. Names, descriptions, prices, variants, stock, photos in consistent sizes. This is the most common reason projects stall.
  • Checkout. Guest checkout, address, delivery method, payment method, order confirmation by SMS, email or Telegram.
  • Admin panel. Order statuses, stock edits, price changes, a simple export for accounting. Your staff must be able to work in it without training.
  • Integrations. Payment provider, delivery service, CRM, 1C or your accounting file, Telegram or WhatsApp notifications for the team.
  • Content in the right languages. Armenian, Russian and English are a common combination in Armenia; each extra language means more text to maintain.

Payments in Armenia

There are two realistic paths. The first is card acquiring through an Armenian bank, which gives you Visa and Mastercard payments on your own checkout page. The second is local wallets and payment services that customers already use, such as Idram and Telcell. Many stores connect both, because a share of buyers will not enter a card number at all.

What matters practically:

  • The bank or provider signs a contract with a registered legal entity or sole proprietor. Prepare company documents, tax ID and a bank account before development ends.
  • Approval takes its own time and depends on the bank, not on your developer. Start the paperwork early.
  • Cash on delivery is still widely expected in Armenia. Support it, and make sure the admin panel marks paid and unpaid orders separately.
  • Refunds and partial refunds need a defined process. Decide who presses the button and under what rule.

Delivery

For Yerevan, most stores use their own courier or a local courier service, with a fixed fee or free above a threshold. For the regions, Haypost and private carriers are the usual options. For international orders, you need weight, dimensions and customs data for each product, which means the catalog has to carry that data from day one.

The technical side is simple: calculate the fee at checkout, pass the order to the carrier, return the tracking number to the customer. The business side is harder: pick a small number of delivery options and write down what happens when a parcel is refused.

Cost and timeline

Public starting prices for a custom online store begin from 499 000 ֏. Separate integrations start from 149 000 ֏, and a simple site or landing page starts from 149 000 ֏ if you decide a store is premature. Support after launch starts from 9 900 ֏ per month. An exact number depends on catalog size, number of integrations, languages and whether you need warehouse or CRM sync — that comes out of a 30-minute brief, not a price list.

Budget separately for things that are not development: product photography, copywriting, bank acquiring fees, and the person who will run the store.

What to prepare before you start

  • A spreadsheet with your products, prices, variants and stock, even if it is imperfect.
  • Photos, or a decision about who shoots them and when.
  • Your legal entity, bank account and payment provider application.
  • Delivery rules: zones, fees, free-shipping threshold, return policy.
  • Who processes orders daily, and in which tool they will see them.

How to choose a contractor

Ask to see stores they have launched and, if possible, the admin panel behind one. Ask who owns the code and the hosting account — it should be you. Ask what happens after launch: who fixes a broken payment on a Saturday, and under what agreement. Be careful with a quote given without questions about your catalog and integrations; it will change. A contractor who says "you do not need this yet, start with a site and a catalog in a messenger" is usually worth trusting.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ready-made platform cheaper than a custom store? Upfront, yes. It becomes expensive when you need a specific integration, a non-standard checkout, or warehouse sync that the platform does not support. Choose custom when the store is central to your revenue and has to fit your processes.

Can I accept payments before my company registration is finished? No. Payment providers contract with a registered business. You can launch with cash on delivery and bank transfer, then switch on card payments when approval comes through.

How many products do I need to justify a store? There is no exact threshold, but below roughly fifty items with stable availability, a well-built site with prices and an order form usually does the job at a fraction of the cost.
